Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a lactation consult?

We start with a comprehensive assessment of you and your baby. This includes health and feeding history, feeding goals, and a weight for in-home visits. I also observe a feed whenever possible (so it's helpful if you can time your feeding for when I arrive). You share with me what's been going well and where you need support. Based on this assessment we will come up with a care plan together. This plan may include recommendations related to positioning, your feeding frequency, pumping, supplementing with formula, and/or other suggestions to help you achieve your feeding goals. With your permission, I'll share this assessment and care plan with your health care provider and your baby's health care provider.

Do you take insurance?

I accept insurance via The Lactation Network (TLN). They will are credentialed with several major local insurance providers. You can verify your benefits on their website. Once you are verified, you will never see a bill or pay any co-pay for my services. If your insurance is not in network for TLN, then you can pay my out-of-pocket rate. Please see my Services page for more information.

What does "evidence based care without judgment" mean?

"Evidence-based care" means that my recommendations are based on the best available research and expert guidelines. "Without judgment" means that I am here to be supportive. You do not need to clean up your living room for me. I know that you are making the best decisions for you and your family, even if they are different than the decisions I make for mine. I love to support all types of people and all types of families.

Do you keep my information confidential?

Absolutely, I store patient information in a secure database and only share your information with your permission (e.g. for coordination of care with your health care team). Read more here.

Do you work with lactation students?

Not at this time.

Are you licensed/certified?

Yes, I am a board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) and a licensed registered nurse in the state of North Carolina.
